INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ‘BEST IDMC TO DATE’

The 8^th biennial meeting of scientists and clinicians of the International Myotonic Dystrophy Consortium,held in Florida in December 2011 was felt by many to be the best IDMC so far. Over 200 delegates included MDSG Patron Prof. David Brook,his predecessor as Patron, Prof. Sir Peter Harper, the MDSG medical advisors Prof Darren Monckton, Dr Mark Rogers and director Dr Margaret Phillips and, as lay observers, MDSG directors John and Sue Kelly. During the conference there were scientific reports from researchers around the world,reporting on their progress in the quest for a therapy to bring relief to DM patients.

DMC-8 closure coincided with the opening of the 2^nd annual family conference of the Myotonic Dystrophy Foundation (MDF) of the US, and a joint session was streamed live worldwide, enabling UK internet users to share in the occasion as it happened.

Prof.Charles Thornton, of the University of Rochester (NY) is pictured, being presented with an IDMC award by Dr. Maurice Swanson,  co-chair of IDMC-8.

 

 

At the close of the MDF conference,  Sir Peter Harper [also pictured] was presented by Prof. Darren Monckton (University of Glasgow)with the MDF’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
