Fish and Chips and Robots....

It was miserable, damp, and cold, outside ,but warm and bright  inside the Methodist Church Hall in Carlton , Nottingham , where on 28th February 2011 - Rare Diseases Day  - Margaret Bowler had ,as usual , managed to get 46  people in some sort of order to sit down together for a Fish and Chip lunch.

Yes, 46 of us -a mixture of families and friends from the Support Group , along with Professor David Brook and his team of researchers from Nottingham University.

After the successful meeting we had last year, Margaret thought it would be a good idea to get together again to catch up on all the latest news - hot from the research labs , where Robots are being used to speed up the mechanics of the research into Myotonic Dystrophy.

Just as important is the friendly exchange of information that takes place. The researchers find it very useful to meet people with MD-instead of looking at tiny samples through a microscope, they can see the wide variety of characteristics in MD, even in the same family, and it literally helps them to put a face to a name !

At the end of the meeting, David Brook was presented with a cheque for over £600 for research. This was a bequest from a family.

Unfortunately, all good things come to an end - after a lot of friendly chat with friends old and new,  David Brook and his team headed back to their robots and samples in their laboratories (we’re all very grateful that they continue to show such dedication), and the rest of us headed home hoping for a reunion next year – as long as there’s Fish and Chips of course!
